Hook up a cosy hat: a perfect last-minute gift idea!

We are all about homemade gifts, and this pattern is the perfect thing to add to your crochet repertoire. With a super easy stitch pattern, hooked in an aran-weight yarn, you can make one up for all your favourite people.


For this crochet hat pattern, you will need:


Measurements of Hat

Hat measures approx 54cm (21.25in) in circumference


Tension of Hat

13 sts and 17 rows to measure 10x10cm over rib using a 5mm hook, or size needed to obtain correct tension


Hat pattern notes

Hat is worked in rounds, with RS facing throughout.
You can adapt the finished measurements of the Hat by working a longer or shorter foundation chain, making sure it’s a multiple of 6 ch.

The yarn used to make the Hat pictured has been discontinued, but a suitable alternative has been listed in the equipment list.



Hat Pattern

Rib

Using a 5mm hook, ch72 and ss to last ch from hook, being careful not to twist ch.

Round 1 (RS) Ch2 (counts as st throughout), htr in next 71 ch, ss to top of beg ch-2. [72 sts]

Rounds 2-7 Ch2, (FPhtr around next st, BPhtr around next st) rep around, ss to beg ch-2.


Main section

Change to 6mm hook.

Round 8 Ch3 (counts as dc, ch2 throughout), dc in st at base of ch-3, *skip 2 sts, (dc, ch2, dc) in next st; rep from * around, ss in beg ch-3 sp. [24 reps of (dc, ch2, dc)]

Rounds 9-27 Ch3, dc in same sp as beg ch-3, (dc, ch2, dc) in each ch-2 sp around, ss in beg ch-3 sp.

Round 28 Ch3, dc in same sp, *(dc, ch2, dc) in next 3 ch-2 sps, dc2tog next 2 ch-2 sp, ch2, dc in same ch-2 sp as second leg of dc2tog, (dc, ch2, dc) in next ch-2 sp; rep from * 3 times more omitting final (dc, ch2, dc), ss in beg ch-3 sp. [20 (dc, ch2, dc) repeats]

Round 29 As Round 9.
Change to 5mm hook.

Round 30 Ch2, dc in same sp, (dc, ch1, dc) in each ch-2 sp around, ss to first ch of beg ch-2.
Fasten off leaving 25cm tail.


To finish your hat

With WS facing, thread the tail through each ch-1 sp on final round and pull tight to close. Weave in the ends.
Sew the pompom to the top of the Hat.
